Refuse & Recycling Collection Information

The collection of refuse, recycling, and yard waste is not a service provided by the Town of Henrietta.  Property owners are required to hire an independent refuse collector licensed to operate in the Town of Henrietta.  The list of licensed refuse and recycling collectors is updated annually.  For assistance/guidance with regard to debris that cannot be disposed of through your refuse company, please contact the Department of Public Works at (585) 359-7005.

Leaves in Wheelbarrow

Although the Town of Henrietta does NOT pickup yard waste, as a Henrietta resident, your refuse collector is required to.  Each of the residential refuse collectors licensed to operate in the Town of Henrietta have their own parameters for yard waste pickup.  Please make yourself familiar with the policy of your refuse collector, because if it is not contained properly, it will not be collected.

  • Casella Waste Systems
Will collect 6 plastic bags or bundles per week, however they will provide a spring and fall cleanup from April 1 - May 31 and October 1 - November 30 where up to 20 plastic bags or bundles will be collected per week. Leaves and grass clippings need to be placed in PLASTIC bags - NOT lawn or leaf paper bags. Brush, branches and sticks need to be bundled in 4’ lengths or shorter, with no bundles bigger around than 2' - the bundles need to be manageable for a person to pick up chest high. Stumps, logs, or cut up trees will NOT be collected. Christmas trees will be collected as long as they are cut and bundled into 4' lengths or shorter.

  • Dependable Disposal
Dependable Disposal (DD) endorses best composting practices by using mulching mowers which helps to reduce unnecessary landfill waste.   DD will collect up to (3) bags/bundles per week.  Bundles must not be any larger than 12 inches in diameter and 30 inches in length.  The bags/bundles must not exceed 25 pounds and be easily handled to prevent worker injury.  We will not collect large branches (greater then 6 inch diameter), stumps, dirt, rocks.  For high volume users, DD will provide an additional 95G container at no additional charge for the yard waste season.  Plastic bags are preferred.  Excess material should be called into their customer service team at 585-505-1500.  Thank you for your cooperation!

  • Waste Management
Will collect 3 yards each week - anything over 3 yards would require calling ahead. Leaves and grass clippings need to be placed in PLASTIC bags only - NOT lawn or leaf paper bags. Brush, branches and sticks need to be bundled and tied in 4’ lengths or shorter, with no bundles bigger around than 2', weighing no more than 50 lbs. Christmas trees will be taken as long as they are cut in half.

Recycling Bin

Although each residential refuse collector is required to pick up recycling, they all handle the recycling differently.  For your convenience, we have gathered the following information.  However, for any specific questions, please contact your refuse collector directly.

  • Casella Waste Systems
Offers 16 gallon bins or 64 gallon recycling toters with a lid. Casella is transitioning to toters, so any new customer will receive a toter and any existing customer wanting a toter will simply need to request it. Cut all cardboard into pieces manageable to fit into the recycling toter. NOTE: Do NOT put any recyclable items into plastic bags! Recycling is taken to the Monroe County Recycling Center for processing.

  • Dependable Disposal
Dependable Disposal (DD) promotes greater recycling by offering a 95G commercial grade cart for all customers, serviced on a weekly basis.  A 65G option is available for smaller generators.  DD asks customers to breakdown cardboard to 2’x2’ to allow for easier loading.  Common Recycling Errors:  Styrofoam is NOT recycling, Plastic bags & plastic film is NOT recycling, wood is NOT recycling.  Recycling material CAN NOT be bagged. For customers that live in high wind areas, DD can provide a lid “hold down” to prevent the lid from blowing open and blowing material.

  • Waste Management
Offers recycle bins. Break down cardboard and tie into 2' x 4'  bundles and place near your recycling bin if it does not fit into the recycling container. NOTE: Do NOT put any recyclable items into plastic bags! Recycling is taken to the Monroe County Recycling Center for processing.

For recyclable items that cannot be collected by your refuse collector, such as electronics or household appliances, a great place to take these items is the Monroe County ecoPark. For more information on what materials can be taken to Monroe County ecoPark and specific requirements, please visit their website at www.monroecounty.gov/ecopark or email mcdes [at] monroecounty.gov (mcdes[at]monroecounty[dot]gov)

There are several licensed residential refuse collectors within the Town.  They do not have assigned routes.  A complete listing of those authorized to collect in Henrietta is available above.  A few suggestions would be to speak with your new neighbors and ask for their recommendations, ask which day of the week they service your area, contact the individual haulers to discuss their services, and prices, etc.

Refuse receptacles should be placed in front of your property after 4:00 p.m. on the day preceding your normal refuse collection day. After collection, all empty refuse containers must be removed as soon as possible, but not later than midnight of the collection day.

Per Town Code §234-11, refuse collectors are not allowed to collect earlier than 6:00 a.m. or later than 6:00 p.m.

Town Code allows refuse collectors to begin picking up trash and recycling at 6:00 a.m. No collection work shall be made on Sundays or holidays, with the exception of commercial establishments, and no work shall commence earlier than 6:00 a.m., and all collection work shall stop at 6:00 p.m.

After carefully sorting out your recycling prior to collection, it can be unnerving to see that recycling go into the same vehicle as your trash.  But what you may not realize is that some of our licensed refuse collectors are utilizing combination trucks with a dividing wall that keeps trash and recycling separated within the same vehicle.  Both Casella and Waste Management have trucks like these operating within Henrietta.  The folks over at Waste Management were willing to share information about these trucks so that we could all have a better understanding of what they look like and how they operate.

One of the most obvious differences in a combination truck is that all material is put into the truck through the side – it helps with both safety and efficiency.  So from behind, you won’t see an opening, but you will see two distinct truck sections: the larger section is for trash and the smaller section is for recycling.  Although all material is put into the same door, there is a divider between the recycling and the trash to keep it separated.  Even when the truck makes it to its final destination, the trash and recycling sections cannot be opened at the same time, further preventing recycling from inadvertently ending up with the trash.  This particular vehicle also runs on compressed natural gas (CNG) making it both quieter and more environmentally friendly.
